An Engaging Story

We interrupt our normal programing to bring you this important announcement…

I had today’s post all planned and done ahead of schedule, but then I found out something wonderful over the weekend. One of my best friends EVER just got engaged!!! I decided that was worth interrupting the normal flow of things. I hope you don’t mind.

This particular person has been a friend of mine for practically two thirds of our lives. That being the case, we’ve known each other through all of our relationships, well, the ones that mattered anyway. Before you’re 10, they don’t count. I’ll admit, we almost never liked the person the other one was dating. You want the best for your friends right? And when you’ve been friends as long as we have, you tend to be a bit protective.

Anyhow, from past relationships, there were some girls I liked, but never any I LOVED, not for him anyhow. This lady, I love. And as my friend is a smart man, he recognized she was a lady worth keeping around, forever. He proposed this weekend and I couldn’t be more excited for them. I wanted to do something special, but since we live about a million miles away now, I can’t celebrate with them in person. Living in Europe seems so glamourous, and it IS… but it’s not so great being away from people you care about for the important stuff. Anyhow, today’s post is dedicated to my friend, his lady and their engagement!

I put together a little drawing inspired by my happiness for them, and the fact that I’ve been tying a lot of knots lately (don’t ask, I have my reasons). This is for the soon to be Mr. & Mrs!

tie the knot heart

I wish I could be there to pop a bottle of champagne with you two, but I hope this does for now. Just to warn you S, the news has reached my family and I have a feeling they will be filing adoption papers soon. It doesn’t matter to them that you’re an adult, as far as they’re concerned, your belong in our family now too.

And the next time I’m in SF, watch out people, we are going to celebrate like there is no tomorrow!

For the rest of you, I hope you all had a great weekend, watched a bit of football and are having a lovely Monday. Another thing that’s not so glamourous about living in Europe: Superbowl? Not important to people in Spain.

We will resume regular posting on Wednesday with little j, here to share some Valentine’s day love (in the form of edible goods) with you. As for me, I’ll be back on Friday. Until then, have a wonderful week and don’t be too knotty while I’m away!

Colorful Guests

A little known fact about moi: I love to color. My pre-school evaluations said if you gave me paper and crayons, I couldn’t be distracted. As a child, I won coloring contests, no joke.

Ironic thing about me: I don’t use much color in life. When it comes to wardrobe and home decor, I like neutrals. I think I should be more adventurous with color for some reason, so I end up buying things that are colorful, and then always regret it. Don’t get me wrong, I love the use of color, I just don’t need to live in it every day.

Another thing I should mention, neutrals, in the world of me, are normal neutrals plus navy (especially navy), red and animal print. Yeah, I know animal print isn’t a color, but it goes with everything, so I’m counting it. I have come to a point where I am mostly fed up with wasting money on color adventures. When E and I moved to Madrid, we had to buy EVERYTHING for our apartment. You can guess the “colors” we ended up with. Our guest room is all black and white except for my colored pencils displayed on the wall (as shown) and these prints.

We’ve lived here just over a year now, and have had something like 17 visitors since we moved! I’m not a huge fan of traditional guestbooks as I enjoy obligatory on-the-spot writing just about as much as I enjoy poetry (see this post). E and I were on our way back from a museum one day, and I noticed the most AMAZING grown-up coloring book in the window of a little artbook store. It was purchased immediately. And can I just say: BEST. GUESTBOOK. EVER.

Ironically, we haven’t had any guests since we bought it. E colored in part to inaugurate it, and I am still deciding between leopard or giraffe. The cover is reserved for little j and her beau when they visit this summer. And for our other guests, we’ll ask them to pick something to color, sign their name and date it. If they want to write something in the margins too, that’s great, if not, no problem. Seriously, how did I never think of this before?

If you like the idea of an alternative guestbook like ours, this book by Joelle Jolivet is the one we got. It can be purchased online by clicking the image to the right. It’s actually french so there is not much availability in the US. Get it before it’s gone. If you want to do this but think you’d prefer a different book, there is a huge selection of grown-up coloring books here. And just for fun, j, B and I all picked one in particular that we thought would be cool to share with you! You’ll find our favorites below, click on the images for more info on each book:

Rolled Tacos & Fanta * Red Wine & Straws * Tree Climbing & High Heels * Disneyland & Rain

Right now, you may be asking yourself, “What do these things have to do with one another?” If you read the title of this post, maybe you see what we’re getting at but you’re wondering, “What on earth is wrong with these ladies? Red wine & straws?” If the later is the case, we think you should have this card. If you happen to be wearing UGGs & a mini together while you’re asking yourself what’s wrong with us, those are two things that should never go together, put on some pants for goodness sake! At least there’s a method to our madness.

Since everyone has their own unique ideas about what things go best together, we thought it would be fun to release a collection of illustrations all about them. Some might be conventional, others a bit more original. To ease you into the series, we’re starting off with something traditional. Hugs and kisses always go together!

hug and kiss 600

Although clearly appropriate for Valentine’s Day, this design would be great for anyone who loves hugs and kisses, chocolate or otherwise. Hugs and kisses not your thing? We’d love to hear what sorts of things you think belong together. Tell us what your favorite combos are in the comments section below or contact us with your suggestions.

Are you all about PDA’s? Put our hugs and kisses on display! Find out how you can get them here.

Do you want to be sure to see the next designs in the series? There are a bunch of ways for you to stay updated with what we are doing; Subscribe to Love Rich & Co via RSS, subscribe to our monthly email, follow our boards on Pinterest, like us on Facebook or follow us on Twitter.

We’ll pick some of our favorite reader contributions to incorporate into the collection, just for you!

Come Write with Me

This may come as a surprise, but writing is not my thing. I know, who writes a blog if writing is not their thing? I’m quite good with some styles of writing, but I just don’t like to do it that much. Luckily for me, the style in which I write this blog is more like talking with my keyboard, so it’s painless. I’m great at talking, it runs in my family.

Above all writing styles, the one I detest most is poetry. In my history of forced poetry reading, I can not think of one poem that I liked. However, there was a poem that was sent to me once, an unexpected poem, that I love. It was actually a form poem given as an English assignment.

For some reason, last Valentine’s Day I thought of that poem. I had this idea to make a similar poem for me and E. I googled form poems and made my own hybrid fill-in-the-blank sheet of what I found. I gave it to E to fill out and also filled it out myself. When we were done, I went through all the questions and answers, arranged them how I liked and edited out the ones that didn’t fit. This is what I came up with:

poem

This would make a great present for any occasion when you want to do something special for someone. Valentine’s Day, of course, fits the bill, but I could also see it being done as a wedding gift, anniversary gift, etc. If you like the idea and want to make this sort of poem on your own, I have provided the question form I used with instructions on our Free Downloads page. If you like the way our poem turned out, check out our Credits page for font info. I decided I wanted this design to have a punch of color, so E and I both picked a color; I picked pink, he picked yellow. If you like the idea of the poem but aren’t confident in making a design yourself, get in contact with us and we’ll make a custom design that suits your vision.

Happy writing!

If you’ve been reading along, you’ve probably noticed that I used to live in San Diego. That’s right, it’s okay to be jealous…

As any good San Diego-un, I know all of the lines in Anchorman by heart. Since I love that movie so darn much, in preparation for this coming official day of love, I put together some conversation hearts dedicated to the Channel 4 News Team.

i friggin love you
