All That Glitters…

We all know the saying, “All that glitters is not gold.” Although that’s true, I have my own beliefs about things that glitter; They are completely awesome!

Today, I’m going to share some awesomeness with you. I mentioned here that when E and I moved to Spain, we had to buy absolutely everything for our home. We live right smack in the middle of Madrid and we don’t have a car because: a) we don’t need one, b) there is nowhere to park and c) I am terrified by Spanish drivers almost as much as I am by Italian drivers. If you’ve ever been in a car in Rome, you know what I’m talking about.

When you don’t have a car, the only way to go is… Swedish of course! E and I spent a lot of time picking out stuff online and then headed to Ikea to round up (almost) everything we needed. We had to keep the purchase below a certain amount to get a good deal on shipping, but we managed to get the essentials taken care of. Since then, we’ve been to Ikea 2 or 3 times and brought stuff back on the subway, and can I just say: No bueno. The only thing less bueno than hauling a load of Ikea stuff home via subway is walking through the streets of Madrid carrying chairs, a coffee table, etc. We’ve done that too, just to keep things interesting.

Since we didn’t want our whole house to look like a Swedish showroom (not that there’s anything wrong with that), I’ve been glaming up some of our stuff to infuse it with my personal style. The project I’m about to share hardly modifies the original furniture, but I am obsessed with it none the less. Why? Because it’s SPARKLY!

DIY Faceted Gem Drawer Pulls

gem faceted drawer pull DIY

Originally I was planning to make these little gems in navy (of course) with a glossy finish. While the drawer pulls were in production, E kept hounding me, “Aren’t you going to paint them?” That planted a seed of doubt, but they were already navy, what better color could they be? The idea of something neon kept popping into my head, probably because it’s been trending everywhere. But really, I’m just not a neon-vanity-drawer-pull type of girl. After digging though my art boxes and getting discouraged I went over my vanity, opened the drawer and pulled out (what else?) multi-colored sparkly nail polish!

The furniture is from Ikea’s Micke series. I know it’s supposed to be a desk, but all dressed up in glittery faceted drawer pulls, it’s way too pretty for our office! Needless to say, as soon at the nail polish was in my hand, it was a done deal. Less than a minute later my navy drawer pulls transformed into gleaming-glittered-goodness! Surprisingly, E was actually into the way they turned out. I was told that animal print was too girly, so I never imagined glitter would be fair game.

If you like my little gem knobs and have some furniture you think could use a bit of glamour, head on over to our DIY page here for the full instructions on how to make these.

Until next week, sparkle on!
